Efudex (fluorouracil 5%) is used to treat precancerous and cancerous skin conditions, such as actinic keratosis and superficial basal cell carcinoma. It works by interfering with the growth of abnormal skin cells.
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area once or twice daily as directed by your doctor. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and healthy skin.
Use sunscreen and protective clothing during treatment. Avoid excessive sun exposure. Do not apply to open wounds or mucous membranes. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any skin infections.
Not to be used in patients allergic to fluorouracil or any of the cream’s components. Contraindicated during pregnancy and in individuals with dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) enzyme deficiency.
Common side effects include redness, burning, itching, scaling, and skin irritation. Severe reactions may include blistering, ulceration, or intense inflammation.
May interact with other topical products or treatments that affect skin healing. Systemic absorption is minimal, but caution is advised when used with other chemotherapy drugs.
Apply as soon as you remember. If it's close to the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose.
Topical overdose is unlikely. In case of accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention.
Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
